About
Lindsey Tyson is a visual artist based in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, where she also grew up. With a creative journey spanning over three decades, Lindsey has worked in a wide range of environments and locations, both in the UK and abroad. She began her career in the automotive industry, designing woven fabrics, before transitioning into making sophisticated handmade felt pieces after starting a family. Her deep love of texture, materiality, and process has been a consistent thread throughout her practice.
Lindsey holds a First-Class BA (Hons) in Textile Design and spent more than 30 years as a textile designer and artisan. Although she has painted all her life, it is only in the past five years that she has focused fully on her painting practice – bringing to it the same curiosity, craftsmanship, and love of making that has always defined her work. Her studio in Scarborough is where her explorations continue to evolve.
About the Work
Lindsey creates art as a way of exploring the unknown. Her work often begins with a question – what if? What if materials are combined in new ways, what if something is stripped back or pushed further? At the heart of her practice is curiosity, experimentation, and a deep need to express what can’t always be articulated in words. For Lindsey, art is an outlet, a release, and a space of complete freedom – freedom from judgement, expectation, and a way to be herself entirely.
Her process is both intuitive and physical. She is deeply drawn to the act of painting – the motion, the mark-making, the sensation of applying paint to a surface. Whether brushing, scraping, layering or blending, the tactile connection to the materials is essential. It’s an immersive, embodied experience that keeps her rooted in the present.
Lindsey often begins with a limited palette or a few chosen materials, letting the piece unfold organically. She rarely knows what the outcome will be, and that unpredictability is central to her creative drive. Her work balances control with spontaneity, embracing the chaos and surprise of making. Even when a concept is planned, the final piece often transforms into something unexpected – and that transformation is part of the magic!
Much of her inspiration comes from the landscape – not as a literal depiction, but through its energy, atmosphere, and light. She seeks to distil a feeling, a moment, or a mood through abstraction and texture. Whether exploring the dynamics of a simple shape or pushing the limits of her materials, Lindsey works until a piece feels finished, and it has revealed itself.
